Cleveland UMC Outreach

Cleveland United Methodist Church participated in numerous Outreach activities throughout the year of 2010. Each year we are proud to open our doors to various organizations seeking help with workshops and training seminars. This year, Cleveland UMC hosted events by CASA, Enotah Drug Coalition, the White County Chamber of Commerce, the Retired Educators of White County, and the White County Master Gardners’ Association along with various neighborhood association meetings.

In April, we participated in the White County Eggstravaganza event located at the new Babyland General, which welcomed the families of White County and surrounding areas to its new location. We took this opportunity to hand-out invitations to the children of our community for our upcoming Vacation Bible School that took place in June. In August, CUMC hosted a Community Day of Prayer to welcome and minister to local members of the community. During that same month, CUMC participated in the “Backto School Bash” at Truett-McConnell College.  At this event, we opened our very own Mildred’s Thrift Store to those families in need of back to school clothing for their children.

In September, our church paired with a local soldier to begin our Afghanistan Outreach Project. To date, we have gathered and mailed over 30 boxes filled with school supplies, toiletries, shoes, snacks, etc… to a unit stationed in Afghanistan. In October, CUMC hosted our annual “Trunk or Treat”. Church members decorate their cars and hand out candy to the entire community. We offer a safe environment for the children of  White County to trick or treat. Cleveland UMC will also hosted a Church Family Fun Day in October that was open to the community, as well. This was a day of old-fashion fun, complete with obstacle courses, music and barbeque. This winter we again hosted the White County High School Band’s Christmas performance and dinner, as well as,  our First Annual “Feed the Need” Christmas Eve dinner for local families and individuals who are homeless, hungry and in need of fellowship.

Cleveland UMC is an on-going host to local Cub Scout Troop #48, the Gold Rush Quilt Guild, Weight Watchers, and Alcoholics Anonymous programs. Cleveland UMC is also a member and serves as a host Church for the White County Caring & Sharing program, which gives assistance to those White County residence in need of help with their electric bills, house payments, gas vouchers and other necessities. Members of our church also contribute to the White County Food Pantry with monetary donations and donated goods, which are dropped off & picked up at our facility.

Mildred’s Thrift Store is also an outstanding, on-going outreach service to our community. A ministry of the UMW, Mildred’s accepts clothing and small household items and is open from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon every Tuesday and the first Saturday of the month. Volunteers sort and display donations, setting aside any special items that have been requested by other agencies. Individuals and families are welcome to shop for discounted clothing & items that they could not otherwise afford.
